Franklin Park is at the end of the "
Emerald Necklace" the string of parks that stretches from here to the Boston Common.
It's named for Benjamin Franklin, a son of Boston (although everyone thinks he was from Philly!) Ben left money to his hometown in his will which the City Father's invested into the 500+ acre park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (of Brookline). Olmsted was the designer of Central Park and he improved upon that design here.
Today the park includes: an 18 hole public golf course (the first golf course in the United States brought to us by George Wright), tennis courts, ball fields, White Stadium and
Franklin Park Zoo. It remains the pastoral oasis in the middle of the city that Olmsted wanted to provide to urban dwellers. This park is 527 acres and spreads across Dorchester, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury. This is the largest public park in Boston and was established in the 19th century.
