Uphams Corner
The neighborhood of Uphams Corner lies around the intersection of Columbia Road and Stoughton Street. The Uphams Corner Marketplace, as well as the Uphams Corner branch of the Boston Public Library are all practically within spitting distance of each other. The sub-neighborhood Edward Everett Square is at the intersecton of Columbia Road, Massachusetts Avenue and Boston Street where Richardson Park is located. Likewise, Jones Hill is the hill bounded by Hancock Street, Plesant Street, Columbia Road and Stoughton Street.
Jones Hill residents identify closely with nearby Savin Hill, because the demographics on Jones Hill trend towards higher-income young professionals, and Everett Square is known as a more distressed part of Dorchester.
The Everett Square pear statue is located at the corner of Columbia Road and Columbia Road (that is not a typo). This area of Dorchester was once a ripe area known for growing the Clapp pear, “an exceptionally sweet and early pear with good flavor and tough skin”, hence the choice. Take a look at the bricks on the ground, with campy quotes about Dorchester on them such as: "You can take the girl out of Dorchester, but you can't take Dorchester out of the girl."
